Fall Closet Audit in Philadelphia: A One-Garment Fit Check

Fall Closet Audit in Philadelphia: Start With One Garment
A closet audit does not have to mean emptying every hanger onto the bed. Start with one garment you used to enjoy but no longer reach for. Put it on, move naturally, and notice what keeps you from wearing it.
The question is not simply, “Do I still like this?” It is also, “Would I wear it again if the fit or repair issue were addressed?”
1. Try it on the way you would actually wear it
Wear the shoes, underlayers, or accessories you normally pair with the garment. Sit, walk, raise your arms, and check the fit from the front, side, and back. A garment can look acceptable while standing still but feel uncomfortable during everyday movement.
2. Check the hem
For pants, notice whether the length works with your usual shoes and whether fabric pools or pulls. For skirts and dresses, consider whether the length feels comfortable and suits the occasions you have in mind.
3. Check the waist and overall shape
Ask whether the waist feels comfortable while standing and sitting. Look for pulling, gaping, or extra fabric that changes the silhouette. Fit changes are garment-specific, so a fitting is the best way to understand what may be possible.
4. Check sleeves and shoulders
On jackets, blouses, dresses, and formalwear, sleeve length and shoulder placement affect the entire appearance. Note tightness, drooping, twisting, or a sleeve that hides too much of the hand.
5. Inspect zippers, seams, and lining
A broken zipper, loose seam, damaged lining, missing button, or small tear can be enough to keep a favorite piece out of rotation. Bring the garment for an assessment before assuming it must be replaced.
6. Decide: wear, alter, repair, or release
Give the garment a clear next step. If you would happily wear it after a fit adjustment or repair, place it in an “alter or repair” group. If you no longer like the style, fabric, or purpose, it may be time to let it go.
