How to Make New Clothes

Start with a simple pattern

If you’re new to sewing, begin with a simple printed pattern. Commercial sewing patterns include an envelope with sizing information, pattern pieces printed on tissue paper and step‑by‑step instructions. Beginners should choose designs with fewer pattern pieces and avoid complex details like collars or zippers. This allows you to focus on learning basic techniques such as cutting, pinning and sewing seams.

Read instructions and prepare

Before cutting any fabric, read the pattern instructions thoroughly and familiarize yourself with the symbols and terminology. Check the recommended fabrics and notions; selecting the right material makes sewing easier and results in a better garment. Pre‑wash fabrics to avoid shrinking later. Lay out the pattern pieces on the fabric according to the grainlines and cut carefully.

Practice and iterate

Sewing skills improve with practice. Take your time to sew straight seams, press each seam flat and try garment fittings as you go. If you’re learning at Mode BiBi, instructors will help you troubleshoot issues and teach techniques like inserting zippers, making darts and finishing edges. Once you master simple patterns, gradually challenge yourself with more complex garments.
