Fall Jackets and Blazers: What to Check Before Alterations
Share
A fall jacket should frame your shape without fighting the layers you wear underneath it. Before deciding what needs adjustment, try the jacket with the knitwear, blouse, or shirt you plan to wear most often.
Start with the shoulders
The shoulder line sets the foundation. Seams should sit cleanly near the edge of your natural shoulder without pulling or collapsing. A fitting can help determine which adjustments are practical for the garment’s construction.
Review sleeve length
Sleeves should work with your proportions and the look you want. Bring the shirt or sweater you expect to layer underneath so the fitting reflects how you will actually wear the jacket.
Check the waist, buttons, and hem
Button the jacket and look for pulling, gaping, or excess volume. Review the waist shaping and hem balance from the front, side, and back.
Move before deciding
Sit, reach, and move your arms during the fitting. A jacket needs to feel comfortable in motion as well as look balanced while standing.
